Element 5: Leading across the health and care system
Welcome to Element 5: Leading across the Health and Care system
Leading across systems, often called systems leadership, requires moving away from organisational interests and competition towards collaboration and working in partnership with others. At times, this is not easy where the structure of the Social Care and the NHS remains fragmented, and under extreme pressure to meet increases in demand for services and within current resources.
System leaders extend their thinking beyond the usual limits of their responsibilities and authority and think about the whole system whether that is across the service, organisation or across Gloucestershire’s Sustainability and Transformation Partnership (STP).
Systems Leadership is about emphasising particular leadership qualities required to effectively work across boundaries with diverse groups of people, patients and colleagues. It involves working in a system and, at the same time, acting as a change agent within that system to improve its overall performance, focused on improving the health of the population and providing treatment and care to all who need it.
In this Element of the Toolkit we will explore
- How to develop a systems mind-set and effective behaviours and create the environment for system leadership.
- Co-creating and building a shared purpose and vision to enable collaborative problem solving, focusing on what is important and what needs to be achieved for patients, service users and the population of Gloucestershire
- Leadership that motivates colleagues and managers to work differently, across service and organisational boundaries. This includes leading by example by co-creating and developing solutions, taking pride on other people’s achievements
- Resources supporting the development of integrated care services
